When I found my apartment in Huron Village a year and a half ago one of the first things I noted was that its near the Hi-Rise Bread Company (and Formaggio Kitchen). Hi-Rise now has another store front open on Mass Ave between Porter and Harvard but this one is conveniently located just a couple of blocks from me.
I love their selection of wines, desserts, and breads. I love their sandwich names like “Ken’s Big Mouth” and “Fern’s Problem Solver” (especially since I have coworkers named Ken and Fern). I love that the bakeshop is open to the dining floor so you can see the bread being baked right in front of you. There is a lot to love about this little neighborhood place that is quickly outgrowing its reputation.
Since I first had “Fern’s Problem Solver” a little over a year ago I’ve been hooked. I’m not really a turkey fan but with monteray jack, avocado, russian dressing on grilled semolina bread the combination is heaven. As you can see, they don’t skimp on the turkey so I actually end up taking about half of it off (save it to scramble with your eggs in the morning!) which I think makes the sandwich even better as the cheese to turkey ratio is more on par.

I first heard about Gran Gusto the day I moved into my apartment in 2010 after going to Paddy’s Lunch to find out that Paddy’s Lunch didn’t serve lunch. Interesting. The bartender recommended Gran Gusto down the road. It’s in an odd little spot in a strip mall-like building with Comcast a couple doors down and connected to a few offices. The décor can be a little cheesy in daylight (nighttime makes it more charming) but everything else was exceptional.
The waiter was charming and would only take my order if I tried it in Italian which got me to loosen up after a day of moving and lifting boxes. We all ordered pizzas and, boy, was that a good decision. My dad claimed it was the best pizza he has had in Boston (or was it the US?) and I had to do everything I could not to eat more than half so I could enjoy it as my first dinner in my new place as well. I got the Arugola Pizza, which I have had every time I have been back since. Tomato sauce, bufula mozzarella, prosciutto, arugula, and parmigiano cheese. The dough is just the right amount of chewy, the prosciutto is salty, the arugula is peppery, the sauce is slightly sweet. Its like a taste explosion.
Did I mention it’s a couple blocks from my house?

Pros: Minutes from my house. Ridiculously large margaritas. Those two things go very well together.
Cons:Everyone raves about their food and how it’s one of the most authentic Mexican restaurants in Boston. This makes me wonder if I just don’t really like authentic Mexican food. I love Ole and I used to love the Border Café (I think I grew out of that though) but the I just find Jose’s so heavy. I suppose that’s authentic?
Anyways, I will definitely be back for more margaritas!
